i have solved the problem!

So as I said, K2P2 rib, then a setup row, then at three points along the thing C4F, then a breakdown row, then more K2P2.

Turns out that I needn't (in fact mustn't) reverse the fronts and backs on the setup row, because what that's doing is just getting the knit ribs together and moving the purls to the outside. So the first one has to lean left and the second one has to lean right, no matter which way the twisty bit of the cable will end up twisting. Likewise when I end the twist and get back to ribbing, I'll do it as written. In between, however, I will do C4B.
