merde alors.

so the clunking sound coming from the engine area sunday evening and early monday morning? that was the AC compressor falling apart. the fact that i stopped hearing the sound midway through the monday morning drive, and haven't heard it since then, was due to the AC compressor's having completed its falling apart. (in russian, i'd use a different verb for that, one with a prefix that made it perfective. it was falling apart, and now it has finished doing that.)

estimate: at least $1400. a thousand dollars in parts alone.

fuck, fuck, fuck.

the thing is this. the air conditioning is not an essential part of the car. it can run fine without it. but, like, not really. yesterday it cooled off some, and today it's raining, but in general, over the summer in the weather we get around here? gotta have AC in the car, man. i don't think it's all the way to unsafe to go without it, but it's certainly uncomfortable, and possibly even unwise.

also. it's technically true that i don't need a car the way i need an apartment -- but really, in this town, yes, i do need a car. setting aside the fact that without a car i'd never be able to get out of town, i wouldn't even really be able to get around town. i can walk from my apartment to everything i need for school, but not really even to the grocery store, and certainly not from the grocery store with, you know, groceries.

it's not a case of the car not being worth this repair. but this is far from the first time i've had this thing in the shop. how can i know that i won't shell out fifteen hundred bucks for a whole new cooling system, and then five weeks from now need new brakes or something? but i do love this car. and i know [livejournal.com profile] datlowen would be just as upset as i'd be, possibly more so, if i traded it in or in some other way got rid of it. (hey, nick, want it back? [grim smile])
