a parable.

Longtime readers may recall that some years ago I had a nasty episode of food poisoning. When I saw the doctor on that occasion, I remember one of the things he said was "... and you're looking quite pale, as well."

"Well, but I'm quite fair-skinned," I said.

"Yes," he said, "but look." And he held up his hand and invited me to hold my hand up next to it, and sure enough, next to his pasty white English skin, my generally very fair skin looked sort of ghostly and blue.

I mention this because I have just remembered that the doctor I saw on Monday said "... and have you been feeling tired?"

"Yes, but not unusually tired - I'm always tired," I said.

She wasn't able to hold up her tired next to mine for comparison, but she did raise an eyebrow at me and order the blood work, and we've seen how that ended.

Moral of the story: I am apparently not to be trusted at all when it comes to awareness of my own symptoms?
