and i'm outta here.

i lied before. it was totally raining when i left this morning, but it was (at that time) just a gentle light rain; only the steeliness of the sky (and the fact that we've been tracking the storm with satellite technology) signalled that this was no mere drizzle.

it's a little rainier now, and the wind has been picking up steadily; the present wind is kind of spooky. it's not wuthering, or anything, but it's an eerie kind of persistent wind -- which is a feature of such storms, i suppose, that the winds are sustained, as opposed to your garden-variety rainstorms, which are blustery.

the university finally got a clue and closed. classes are cancelled as of 1:00 this afternoon, so i'm off the hook for my 2:00 class (which happens to be my least favorite, so yay!). i had my 11:00 meeting with a student, but needn't meet with my classmate at 1:00 (in fact she called off to go home and nail her windows shut or something), so i will shortly go home, put some things in a bag, call my parents, and hit the road. i think that's the best thing. part of me wants to stay here and watch the storm come in, and then go up to DC once it's blown mostly through -- but the state DC's going to be in is a bit of a turn-off, to say nothing of my earnest desire not to be stuck in my apartment with no electricity and a gimpy leg. i mean, if i can't tell you all "wow, it's really windy now. wow, it's even windier", then what's the point of riding it out?

so, i think i'm going.
