The first day at the new job was exhausting.
That was true of the first day at the previous job, as well, mind you. (NOTE: going forward, I'm going to have to call the previous job my Interim Job, because I will always think of CASL as my Old Job and the law firm as my First Job. All other jobs have been various part-time bill-paying arrangements in between degrees, really. So. Law firm = first job, think tank = Old Job, giant defense contractor = Interim Job, small non-defense contractor = New Job. At some point this job will no longer be New, but I'll revisit the terminology then.)
Annnyway. It was also true that the first day at the previous job was exhausting. The first week, really. Himself pointed out that it's hard out there for an introvert, and meeting new people and being "on" all the time is indeed totally exhausting. At the previous job, there was also the issue that I'd been involuntarily separated from a job I really liked, but this week I've gladly left a job I didn't like and I still came home yesterday begging Himself to come pick me up at the metro instead of making me take the bus and walk back from the bus stop, and my cheekbones ached from smiling at strangers.
Today, instead of getting a lift to the train in the morning and home from the train in the evening, I walked to the bus in the morning and walked back in the evening. Instead of wandering around being shown thing and forgetting them five minutes later, I had productive conversations and did useful work. I implemented a communications innovation that caused my manager (and possibly also one teammate) to say "Why didn't I think of that?"
Today, the second day at the new job was better than the last day at the old job.
I have definitely made the right choice.
