apparently this is totally normal

Tonight my nose started bleeding and wouldn't stop.

And when I say bleeding, I don't mean oh, I wiped my nose and it was bloody and then I wiped it again and it was bloody again. I mean it was running freely. When I took one tissue away, before I could grab another one it was pouring. It dripped on my collarbone and on my arm. The shirts I was wearing are soaking in cold water right now; fortunately they were only sort of spotted. My hands were as sticky as if I had been at a crime scene.

For extra difficulty points, I was in the car when this happened, on my way home from rehearsal. I had also - and this is just showing off, now - forgotten my phone at home when I went out to rehearsal in the first place. So I couldn't call Himself to tell him I was coming home bleeding profusely and please be ready to maybe take me to the hospital. I couldn't pull over and call the ENT and ask if I should go to the ER instead of going home. I couldn't call 911. All I could do was drive home, all of about four miles, and think about whether Himself would already be in bed when I got there.

Would I be able to let myself in with my keys, or would I have to lean on the doorbell until he came down, half-dressed and annoyed, and demanded to know who the hell was ringing the doorbell at this hour - and then finding me spewing blood on the doorstep? If I got in, could I call to him from downstairs? Or would I have to go up to what we're currently using as a bedroom and wake him up? I didn't want to touch any more things than I had to, because my hands were covered with blood.

In the event, the hockey game had just ended, so he was still in the living room when I got in, and he said "Hi" and I said "Help me --" and he sprang into action the way of course you would if your wife came in frantically holding blood-soaked tissues to her face. I went to the kitchen sink and he called the doctor on my phone and the doctor walked us through trying to get the bleeding under control - Afrin nasal spray, believe it or not, followed by ten minutes of leaning forward and pinching, x3 - and it did seem to slow it down quite a bit. The doctor was not at all concerned that this had happened; he said what with the warm weather, things had probably dilated a bit up in there, and it's likely I blew my nose in such a way that I knocked a scab loose. Happens all the time, I guess. That made me a lot less frightened, but no less annoyed.

I don't like it one bit. I've also swallowed a fair amount of blood, and that doesn't feel very good in my throat right now. I'm back to the mustache dressing, and it feels damp against the end of my nose. Feh. I was really enjoying feeling better and better, breathing clearly, all that stuff.

And I'm back to sleeping sitting up on the sofa, which right now is my least favorite thing of all.
