office hours

i have one office hour for every hour i teach. i don't think that's unreasonable. but these kids! they keep e-mailing me! my office hours aren't good enough for them, and they want to make appointments! GAH! (there's a biggish assignment due on wednesday, and they think -- probably with reason -- that they don't know anything about phonology and need Help.)

don't give in. Otherwise, you will be spending your life in your office. You could consider changing your office hours. You could maybe bring it up in class, and try to figure out what hours are good for you and them. Tell them that you will only make an appointment if the student shows you that they are in class during your office hours. They will get better.

See? This is why, when people suggest I should teach, I stare at them as though space weevils are sprouting fully-formed from their nostrils.

Because I'll get students that are just like me.
