• Last night at bedtime, the prince, who is six, asked me if everything in the world is 3D. I said I was pretty sure it was, and he thought about it for a second and then asked, "What about a piece of paper?" I told him that was a very smart question to ask, because paper really seems like it might be 2D, doesn't it, but it's actually 3D and the third dimension, the depth, is just very, very small. "It's a very slender rectangular prism," he said, knocking my socks off.

• Now, what do you think about the lid of a can after the can opener opens it?, I asked him. Or, like, a manhole cover? Hey—what do you think about one hair? "It's a very slender cylinder!" he exclaimed. "And it can be straight like mine and yours or curly like Daddy's!" So I had to tell him that a curly hair was probably not a cylinder but another shape called a helix. He knows a second grader named Felix, so that was the end of our conversation about shapes. 😄

• Right now I am listening to the glorious sound of someone who is not me hanging out in my driveway cleaning every inch of my car. ❤️
