weekend update

... but no dennis miller. sorry. :-)

friday: drove up to the curling club, swinging by to pick up [livejournal.com profile] darthrami from her office. refresher course in pebbling, followed by a six-end game in which the team of N, [livejournal.com profile] darthrami, D, and [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw whupped the asses of the team of [livejournal.com profile] datlowen, self, BG-the-most-annoying-man-alive, and bonspiel-skip B.

phone rang on the way up: dad calling with News. since my aunt got sick, he's been looking for a good time to go visit her; he doesn't want to overwhelm her, you know, with tons of people when she's not up for it, etc., etc. but friday afternoon, my uncle had called and said, basically, not that she's, like, ready to entertain or anything, but you'd better come now. so my parents had spent the afternoon packing for a trip of Who Knows How Long, and were calling around 6:00 to let me know they were about to get in the car and begin the ten-hour drive.

yeah, so that sucked.

girl-cousin who lives in the area was taking her to be admitted to the hospital. boy-cousin who lives in california had been summoned ("get on a plane and come home right now."), shortly to be followed by his wife and baby daughter. my brother and i will be Kept Posted; it could be weeks, my father tells me the doctors are saying, or it could be days.

ugh.

so, [livejournal.com profile] esti626's party after curling, but, like, my heart wasn't really in it. went home, went to sleep, hadn't had as much to drink as i'd have liked.

saturday: [livejournal.com profile] datlowen came to pick up [livejournal.com profile] darthrami and self to head up to the curling open house. we discovered on the way that the planned ramp closure (incidentally, guys, i think it was the funeral for the First Elected Mayor Of DC, and not some random dead cop) didn't have a quick-n-easy detour as we'd expected, and a half-hour/45-minute trip took us like two hours, as we had to go through the city and try to negotiate intersections where the road forks to the left and the right and the sign tells us the street we want is straight ahead. spent a long time on Jesus Street, fortunately had a good laugh about it, realized about halfway to the club that [livejournal.com profile] darthrami and i had left our curling stuff in my car back in crystal city. d'oh! so we hung out at the club for about half an hour, then borrowed [livejournal.com profile] datlowen's car to go all the way back and get the stuff out of my trunk, and come back up again. fortunately, by then the ramp was reopened, and we did the whole round trip in a shade more than an hour. also got food, because blood sugar = good.

i want to marry [livejournal.com profile] datlowen's car. that's all i have to say about that.

phone rang again: dad with more News. they'd arrived and seen my aunt, and she was doing much better than my uncle had led them to believe. apparently, between his making his phone calls and the next time my parents spoke to him, when they stopped for the night in Where The Hell, Pennsylvania, she'd made a whole load of the good sort of progress. she'd spoken to a doctor who'd made her feel a lot better with asking the right questions, giving the right information, etc. everyone's still On Edge, but the sense that there's an hourglass running out is not quite as much. she's having liver tests tomorrow, the outcome of which will be informative in some way i don't entirely understand. i will continue to be Kept Posted; i don't want to do it, but i'm about to investigate how i'd get up there if i had to do it in a hurry. i don't want to see her in the shape i know she'll be in, but i don't want not to see her [fox refuses to give utterance to the words that complete that sentence].

after curling, took [livejournal.com profile] darthrami to get a kitty-gate, then went for dinner and were joined by [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw, [livejournal.com profile] datlowen, and [livejournal.com profile] jgesteve for school of rock, of which the first ten minutes didn't quite suck and the rest (with the exception of one cheap and completely unnecessary line) was pretty good. home again, started to watch eddie izzard's "glorious" but dozed off, so i went to sleep.

sunday: picked up [livejournal.com profile] jgesteve and [livejournal.com profile] datlowen and [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw for curling open house, day 2. taught some people some stuff, hung out, pimped the game as hard as i could. this took me to about 5:30. had to come home, but v. sleepy. [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw pointed out that i hadn't actually eaten all day; a couple of cookies, a potato skin, and some broccoli with dip are not enough calories even for a slowly-metabolizing fox. and she was right. i got in the car and drove until the First Major Landmark, which is about an hour, and was slapping my face for the last few miles. took a little snooze (actually a longer one than i'd intended, because yet again the alarm-clock function on my phone isn't working; i've about had it with replacing these fuckers, even though every time i do i get six more months of warranty -- i'm thinking of just trading up to a more reliable model), bought a sandwich and a soda, felt like a new woman. made the trip in three hours instead of 2.5. not too bad. apartment was stuffy from indian-summer-type heat wave; have turned the AC back on, even though is november. wish weather would make up its fucking mind.

haven't heard from the folks today. am assuming, for the present, that no news = good news. must now have some more soda, grade a few papers, make some sort of plan for tomorrow, and sleeep ...

eta: but i'm feeling sort of off-color, since about an hour before i left the club, and i'm not sure the lack of blood sugar or the sick aunt was it entirely. have just taken my temperature, and it's 98.6 on the button, which for me is sort of feverish. i hope it's just from excitement (of all sorts), and not the start of something Icky. that's the last thing i need right now ...
