fox: penguin says the throughline took a left turn somewhere (continuity (by Lanning))

"okay, let's try this again."

my cousin's daughter is three years old, and like many small children, has a mind like a kid-sized steel trap. it doesn't seem that she can read yet, but she can recite a whole storybook after it's been read to her only a couple of times. that sort of thing. naturally you have to be careful not to say anything more than once within her earshot unless you're comfortable having it repeated back to you in mixed company.

so my cousin has, apparently, a tendency to false-start when she's trying to leave the house. she'll get the kid into her car seat, get the van started, and then realize that she left her purse on the kitchen counter or didn't put down food for the dogs or didn't lock the back door or something like that. she turns off the engine, runs inside and fixes whatever it was, comes back to the car, and says "okay, let's try this again." like you do, you know -- everybody has catch-phrases associated with them.

all of this was explained to me when i was up and staying with them the week before thanksgiving, when on the way to my aunt's house we had to stop to put gas in the car; my cousin pumps the gas, grabs the receipt, gets back in the car, and from the back seat the three-year-old says "okay, let's try this again."

none of which has any point, really, except by way of working around to the point that in my frenzied end-of-the-semester state, i managed to keep track of the day of the week but not the actual date. of course rationally i knew that the 17th was a wednesday, but somehow tuesday evening when i looked at the portal and saw that [livejournal.com profile] lanning's birthday is december 17 i said to myself, "hey, that's today!" and then publicly wished her a happy birthday a solid four hours before it was time.

so. let's try this again. i was just getting warmed up. seeing if you were paying attention. making sure the sound was on. etc.

now that it's 1:30 on wednesday, i.e. it really is the 17th and no mistake, happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] lanning. still [bounce] and still [hugs], and i hope tuesday was as happy as if it had been your birthday for real. :-)
