(1700 X CostPerMile)/2

your excursion companions should have that equation in mind. 1700 miles = pre-trip maint,10% of the real life of tires, the inevitable wheel alignment and the wear and tear on your nerves as You do ALL the DRIVING:

i'm tired/hungover/bringing powertools to keep away the boredom - screw the mile high club, i wanna have multiple-political-district-orgasms; can't drive stick/automatic/anything-so-uncool-as-your-car/these-new-vaccuum-cleaners/because-I'm-now-a-jainist-and-bugs-get-all-squishy-on-car-windshields; my hemroids/bad hip/last-night's-bikini-wax-job is bothering me, you'll be a dear and drive, won't you dear?

just don't expect that to happen. real friends will understand, but you might need to explain if they don't think of it first. (this changes when you hit late 30's, petty fights over who gets the honour of paying becomes the norm)

if your friends offer to cover your expenses without you having to explain, take'm out dinner and treat, they're good people.
