on my way to meet datlowen yesterday, passing by the mcdonald's in the next block, i saw a skinny middle-aged chinese man who looked so much like FSIL's father that my first thought was "what on earth would he be doing here? -- nah, can't be him." and then i remembered, and of course it really can't have been him at all. (for those just joining us: FSIL's father died suddenly this march 24.) it was quite startling.

the wedding is in OMG fifteen days.

to which end, i really needed to get my dress altered. which was the purpose of the outing with datlowen. i'd finally bought shoes on sunday, so i took them to where the dress has been living for the past couple of weeks, got into the whole ensemble, and determined that the dress doesn't need to be hemmed at all. outstanding! it does need taking in, though, so i'll pick it up next wednesday.

sunday i also bought completely unnecessary red shoes, which i adore. they are fabulous. it doesn't matter that i don't have anything specific that i know they go with. the dress will come later. (this is the second time in my life that i've bought red shoes with the confidence that a dress would come later -- and the first time, it did. [g] i've also bought the world's most fabulous red dress, with the confidence that the occasion would come later -- and it did!)

the following is not electioneering: when i move to england at the end of september, i will be transferring my permanent address from virginia back to my parents' address in ohio, because it'll make mail-forwarding just so much easier. the question is, how soon do i need to do this in order to be able to vote absentee from ohio rather than virginia in november? if i don't do it in time, see, i won't be able to vote absentee at all -- i won't be a resident of virginia, but i won't have registered to vote in ohio in time. this would be Very Bad. (aside from which -- and here's the non-electioneering -- my vote will be more valuable in ohio, which is normally somewhat up for grabs, than in virginia, which will go red no question.) but i doubt i can change my address to ohio before i've actually left virginia.

anyone have thoughts on this? ohio residents: any idea what is the registration deadline to vote in the general election in november?

quick perusal says you must register 30 days before an election, and you gotta live there for 30 days to be a resident. but, there may be exceptions and whatnot.

Registration deadlines are generally in October, but:

1) The state has to send out your absentee ballot to your out-of-state location

2) You have to get it, and

3) The state has to get it back by election day.

Which means you'll want to have registered in Ohio, and as an absentee, well in advance of the election.

Since there is no election of consequence between now and November, I'd suggest registering yourself in Ohio now. Like the next time you visit your folks do it in person at city hall or something. That way if there's a problem, you can handle it before you leave the country.

FYI: it is possible to cast a federal (only a federal) ballot at the local consulate in whatever country you're residing in. If what you're seriously concerned about is your ballot being counted in the Presidential melee, that might be the way to go if there's a problem with moving your registration to Ohio later. Not sure where that vote would be counted though: probably at your last place of registration is my guess.

i don't think i can register in Ohio without some proof of residence, though. i mean, all my bills, my driver's license, etc., show my address in virginia. and i don't think i can change my address if i'm not actually present in the state -- this may not be an issue for ohio, but it's a big one for virginia, where if you're there they damn well want to know it (being how it was a virginia loophole several of the 9/11 guys got through to get drivers' licenses in the first place).

not that i won't ask, when i'm home for the wedding in two weeks. but, you know.

Yeah. At least ask. Here (California where we're weird and I know it) I can register to vote on a street corner and no one asks for ID even. So I'd suspect that the stringency with which they worry about residency varies from state to state.

I just realised that it's more difficult to get a library card in this state than it is to register to vote. Now that's screwed up, I think. Or is it?
