RAR stupid @#$%!^&* sonofa -- oh. okay.

so last night around midnight i was Abruptly Disconnected. the DSL modem went -click- and the connection went -pft- and when i reloaded the page i was on i got that page of self-diagnostics the ISP gives me when That Sort Of Thing happens.

normally it's a PPOE issue (i don't know what that means -- less geek than nerd, remember -- but that's normally what it is). fixing this involves turning the modem off for ten seconds, turning it on again, waiting until the little PPOE light turns on, closing the browser, reopening it, and going on my merry way. i say "normally" like this happens all the time; it's not actually frequent, but it's happened two or three times maybe and it's the only connectivity trouble i've ever had.

but that didn't work last night, and after trying it twice there was a big red FAIL result in the layer above that, which had acronyms i don't even remember. part of it was ATM. something about the carrier's service. (not sure what this means, either, with relation to the other things it could have been -- my connection, the modem, the ISP -- oh, the carrier must be verizon, eh?) followed those instructions a couple of times, which included poking the hole in the back of the modem with a paperclip to reset it. still nothing.

after about half an hour, i gave up and went to bed, because what, i was going to call customer service in the middle of the night? (i know, a lot of you are saying "... well, yeah." but dudes.) and when i woke up in the morning, it was still down. i tried the poking-with-a-paperclip thing once more, waited for the PPOE light to come on, which it didn't, so i thought, well, hell -- i can't exactly call customer service now when i have to leave the house in ten minutes. i'll have to call them later. like tomorrow. rar.

but then when i came out of the shower i had the little "new e-mail" icon. and in order to have new e-mail, outlook would have to be able to connect to the servers. and in order for outlook to be able to connect to the servers, my connection would have to be back up. i looked at the modem -- PPOE light was on.

no idea what happened, but no longer complaining.

what i am still complaining about is the pain in my right ear. the stiffness in my neck i was telling some of you about last night is mostly gone; there's still a little tenderness, but it's not really in the neck as much as in the hollow under the top corner of my jaw, where it is almost certainly an extension of whatever's going on with my ear. am loaded up on decongestants and analgesics, so i'm not really sure what's going on. (it no longer hurts my neck to hiccup, however, so that's a plus.)

going to get some hot tea now. hot tea can cure almost anything.

DSL, huh? My condolences. *ducks*

That neck/ear thing sounds bad. Bad in a very not fun kind of way. Do not make me worry in your general direction.

Have you had that ear checked out? You don't want to ignore an ear infection.

it has now been bothering me for approximately twelve hours. that's not yet what i'd call persistent. :-)

but it's not really in the neck as much as in the hollow under the top corner of my jaw, where it is almost certainly an extension of whatever's going on with my ear.

It could also be a TMJ (tempor-mandibular joint) problem, at least in part. Might ask your dentist next time you're in.

Okay. But, if it does persist.

wait, now who's on which end of this conversation?

;-)

let's make a deal ...

Wow...That sounds like work! No, I mean my work. They let me play with satelites with absolutely no training on them. Except the warning, if I want kids don't stand in front of the dish. And what you said is about what we do before we call DC and beg for help. heee...glad to see you're up and running again.

I could explain it to you if you like...

PPOE is actually meant to be PPPOE which means... nah you really don't want to know do you ;-)

Definitely sounds like TMJ Syndrome to me (and I've suffered with it for about 10 years now). It's not your ear causing the pain, but the jaw joint and surrounding nerves. Put "Temporomandibular joint syndrome" into Google and you'll get lots of info about it. A dentist can make a mouthguard to keep you from grinding your teeth, but if muscle pain and dislocation continue, a good chiropractor can be a *huge* help.
