holy SHIT batman!

So okay.  The semifinals are not quite semifinals -- they're page playoffs, which gives the higher-finishing teams more chances to get at the medals, which is only right in my opinion.  So the winner of 1-2 goes straight to the gold medal round without passing Go or collecting $200, while the loser drops to the bronze medal game and plays the winner of the 3-4 game.  The loser of the 3-4 game is out.  The winner of the bronze medal game does not get the bronze medal; the loser of the bronze medal game gets the bronze medal, and the winner goes on to face the team already sitting in the gold medal round.

Everybody got that?

So this morning was Sweden vs. USA, who finished 1-2 in the round robin, and this afternoon was Canada vs. Norway, who finished 3-4.  The next game will be the bronze medal game between Sweden and Norway.  Who can tell me how the playoff games ended?

That's right; USA won this morning and Norway won this afternoon, and both games were nailbiters.  In fact USA had to steal the tenth end, but they did when the Swedish skip -- who was undefeated coming into today, remember -- missed two draws in a row and went through the house.  Canada vs. Norway was leaning Canada's way before the break, but after the fifth end Norway took three to tie it and then stole one and then blanked some stuff and then stole three in the ninth on a slightly-too-heavy-draw by Jennifer Jones, which left Canada down four coming home and at this level it almost doesn't matter that you've got the hammer, there's an element of stealing to taking four points.  Oy.  It was rough, but dudes, if you ever get a chance to see Dordi Nordby play live, take it.

[is dead from curling]

The other game this evening is Japan vs. Scotland for the senior women's championship.  Sweden got the bronze and Canada came fourth.  (Seniors do normal 1-4, 2-3 semifinals.  I think.  They may have been 1-2, 3-4, which would be crazy, but they were ordinary semifinals with the winners advancing, is my point.)  In the senior men's, Canada won gold, USA silver, Switzerland bronze (Swiss cheer all week: Hopp Schwiz!), with England in fourth.  Because I know you are all terribly interested in the details.  :-)
