grr, argh (calling birds)

had a whole day of errandy things, including purchase of stamps for new year's cards.  got all the way home before i realized, dammit, most of my cards are square, and therefore need extra postage.

so i'll be out again before the close of business, oh yes.

Square cards need more postage? *boggles*

Huh... well you know what they say about educational advances occuring on a diurnal basis...

It's such fucking bullshit that square cards need more postage. I've come to accept it, but what really chaps my ass is that there is no .49 stamp. Nor is there a .50 stamp anymore. You have to put several stamps on the envelope, and sinee, by and large, you're dealing with the square card madness because you care about the way things look, the extra stamps bother you. er, me.

i get the extra postage -- there must be a machine that could sort the square envelopes as well as the rectangular ones, but replacing them in every post office would be mad expensive and drive everyone's postage up, instead of just those of us sending the square-shaped things. i hear you on the lack of appropriate stamp, though. i'm going to have to go get ten-cent and two-cent stamps, and rar.

what's your address? I am still sending out christmas cards (perpetually behind...) and I don't have your UK address (lost it) and only a very old US addy.

the thing that I don't get is that the machine can sort larger rectangular envelopes of varying dimensions, so why won't it sort a square evelope?

because (as i understand it) when the sides are different lengths, it can orient them properly and then line up the top right corners of each one for cancelling; but when the sides are all the same length, all the corners line up no matter which way the things are oriented.

oh, that's interesting. good to know.

At the Hallmark store, they have special envelopes for square cards so you don't have to pay the extra postage.
