ugh ...
So your friendly neighborhood Fox is lactose-intolerant. Known this for several months now. (It happened quite suddenly; I realized that my bouts of feeling Not At All Well coincided pretty reliably with my having consumed dairy products; I went off dairy for several days, in an extremely scientific test [g], and felt entirely better; I had a dessert with whipped cream frosting, in a moment of vacancy, at a bridal shower, and was *miserable.* That confirmed it.) Carry Lactaid wherever I go.
Have pretty much figured out my limits; cream in coffee is okay, but much more than that and I need something fairly substantial to "dilute" the Bad Things; pizza is generally safe for me, because the crust counteracts the cheese quite nicely and I'm all good. Definitely stay away from yogurt, non-lactose-reduced milk, and so on. Cream sauces on pasta are okay; see above. Creme brulee is okay, thank god; I guess it's the egg that balances the cream.
For anyone who might have been thinking "Fox, my love, you're not lactose-intolerant at all; don't forget that your Troubles were also at their worst from about September 12 - 30," I can confidently say: hooey.
Cheesecake + three extra-strength Lactaid = Very Unhappy Fox. :-(
