one man's loss is another man's gain
So here at the Council on Ketchup Marketing, the job I'm doing has the following history: it used to be someone's job. That person quit in the beginning of August, since which time they've been trying to replace her. She trained a temp in her last couple of days; he was here until the Friday before last, but he got a temp-to-hire gig, so on his last afternoon he trained me. I am now in my second full week, and the boss lady just came out to give her minions the news that the person to whom they made an offer has turned them down in favor of a lesser-paying job he thinks he'll like better. This is obviously not outstanding news for them, but it's decent news for me, because while I don't want a long-term temp situation, it is relaxing not to have to keep calling the agency to fill the time between now and getting a Real Job. That is, it's good to have something ongoing to do while waiting for the phone to ring (again).
In other matters: today at lunch I passed by a panhandler shaking his cup of change and saying "No meat, please! I know I'm homeless, don't mean I can't be healthy, only vegetables, vegetables only, please!" Apparently it turns out beggars can be choosers.
