in which i don't quite take over the world, but i try

So! My plan for Saturday was:
  • get someone to join me for my Saturday adventure
  • grocery shopping
  • getting of Stuff, including but not limited to 3-oz.-or-less travel containers for shampoo etc., shelf lining paper, and an additional bookshelf
  • investigation of the DVD sale at Barnes & Noble (which, incidentally, ends Jan. 30)
  • make a week's worth of lunches to bring to work, with the groceries I just bought
  • make order out of the OMGCHAOS that is my small apartment
  • LAUNDRY LAUNDRY LAUNDRY
  • movies!

What eventually happened with my Saturday:
  • retrieve [livejournal.com profile] sanj
  • have some lunch
  • go to get bookshelf of the same type I already have -- and fail. turns out? Bed Bath and Beyond doesn't stock bookshelves outside of back-to-school time. (Because when the hell else would people need bookshelves? Grr.) Look for similar at Target; also fail. Give up.
  • look for travel containers. Find nothing smaller than 4 oz. Determine that a fortune is to be made in travel containers of TSA-approved sizes.
  • hit the grocery store, but not having made a list, wander for a bit and get some things mostly at random. This is okay, though, because I can do this week's lunches anyway, and will make a list before the next time I go to the store.
  • home, where instead of doing laundry, sorting apartment into tidiness, etc. while [livejournal.com profile] sanj keeps me company, we read Harry Potter and the [insert name here] Stone and all the Lord of the Rings in Fifteen Minutes, which has [livejournal.com profile] sanj literally wheezing with laughter. We determine to go see Children of Men at 8:20, and plan to stop at BN along the way.
  • get to BN and dither for far too long about DVDs. I claim full responsibility for this. Ultimately acquire House season 2 and the complete Horatio Hornblower, and leave the store at approx. the time we had hoped to arrive at the movie theater in order to deal with the inevitable parking melee.
  • get lost on the way to the theater, because I was never 100% confident I knew how to get there before, and it's been like three years.
  • arrive in the parking lot 8:15 and drive around a while unable, of course, to find any parking. Spot a family heading back to their car and stalk them, but they pull a next-row fakeout and I lose the space to a small SUV full of chemically-influenced baggy-clothes-wearing hoodlums, who yell and call me names (apparently; all I heard was the yelling) when I honk at them once. So I give up and keep circling, and eventually get a much better space, so nyeah. By this time it is 8:35, so we decide to see Notes on a Scandal at 9:15 instead.
  • see movie, which is brilliant.
  • redeposit [livejournal.com profile] sanj and return home.

What I meant to do with my Sunday was accomplish the things I hadn't done on Saturday. The bookshelf thing was still going to be difficult, but I found where Linens & Things has something similar that might go with my DVD shelves if not my bookshelves, so maybe it would be okay. There was shelf lining paper at The Container Store, so I could get that at the same time I was getting wee travel containers and not have to schlep all the way to Lowe's (Rt. 1, south of the Beltway). But then! Having got better produce and travel-size toothpaste at Harris Teeter, I went back to BBB to see if I could, I don't know, magically find something that hadn't been there the day before -- and I realized that I know the name of the manufacturer of the shelves I want. There's a lot of other stuff in there by the same company, just not the bookshelves. I will go home and google this name, and not settle for whatever they have at L&T! (This saves me a side trip, as well.)

So off I go home, where I do indeed make a week's worth of lunches, plus I do four loads of laundry, plus I straighten my kitchen and living room and get the coffee ready for this morning. I didn't get the place quite ship-shape enough that it's ready to be vacuumed and whatnot, but it's no longer nearly as embarrassing to contemplate having other people see it. (I had apologized to [livejournal.com profile] sanj the day before.) All the laundry is folded and put away! All the dishes are in the dishwasher, which I started this morning before I left the house! I have one more shelf that's not on the wall, and I googled the bookshelf people so I will find out how to get what I want even though it's not back-to-school season. Today I will pay my bills. I am Generally Victorious!

Try the "travel sizes" section at CVS. Lots of 1 and 2 oz containers that you can empty out and fill with your stuff.
