you can take the girl out of the city ...

... and, i'm here to tell you, you can also take the city out of the girl.

drove up for curling on friday, and instead of going around the beltway, i went into dc to retrieve [livejournal.com profile] darthrami and also a friend of mine from college, who was coming to watch. (i'm a total curling pusher. i say this without shame or regret.) was to retrieve friend first, at 17th and M. failed to make the left turn onto (one-way) 18th from constitution ave., as i should have, because 17th is one-way coming the other direction, so i went all the way to 15th, up to vermont, around thomas circle, and then over on M to 17th and where i was supposed to be. took about ten minutes longer than i expected, but no biggie, because friend had been nabbed by her boss on the way out the door and wasn't as ready as she'd thought. i waited a couple of minutes for her to emerge, even being late as i was.

then to get [livejournal.com profile] darthrami from 18th and I. was already headed I-ward on 17th; came to 17th and K; should have continued on 17th, but like an idiot, i turned right on K street. couldn't turn left on 18th, because (recall) it was one-way going up, i.e., to the right, away from I street. couldn't turn left on 19th, because it was rush hour. couldn't turn left on 20th, because it was one-way going up. couldn't turn left on 21st, because it was rush hour and i wasn't driving a bus. was, in short, stuck on K street, headed for 66 and the virginia 'burbs or the whitehurst freeway, georgetown, and other virginia 'burbs. howled at fate, traffic, etc., to the great amusement of friend-from-college in the passenger seat. finally, finally, reasserted my city-driving identity and elbowed my way over to the access road, getting off K street and jogging a couple of corners to wind up ... at 24th and Penn.

that was about when the phone rang. [livejournal.com profile] darthrami heard where we were and said, and i quote, "oh my god!" she walked over to 18th and Penn, and we picked her up and made it to curling on time, but good lord. one wrong decision, and look what it costs you.
