this is very exciting.
First, a related report: I am pleased to inform you, as if you cared at all, that my brother, who lives in Boston, has not forgotten that, like me, he grew up in Cleveland, and is therefore cheering on the Indians rather (or at least more) than the Red Sox in the present American League Championship Series.
But what's exciting is this.
I have an Indians hat, see. It is an authentic mid-90's-vintage fitted baseball cap made of 100% wool, which means it is difficult to clean. (In fact that tag advises me to dry clean only.) It is also v. dirty. Plus, it is too big, and into the bargain it has the unfortunate Chief Wahoo on it, which, okay, I don't think calling the team the Indians is inherently offensive?, but the mascot character kind of really, really is. (This is the opposite way of how I feel about the local NFL team here in Our Nation's Capital. The logo: not bad. The name "Redskins"? [cringe]. Suppose we swap symbols, and then Cleveland baseball can have an inoffensive name and logo, and Washington football can reinvent itself entire, just as Washington basketball did ten years ago or so when they decided "Bullets" was maybe not a good name for a professional sports team in a town with a gun problem.)
So I ordered a new cap. The new one will not be made of wool, and will be smaller, and will have the cursive "I" on it instead of the grinning caricature. Win-win-win, right? And because the difference between regular 7-10-day delivery and 2-by-which-they-mean-3-day delivery is only two bucks, I go ahead and shell for the expedited service.
On the third day, the new cap arrives. Hurrah! But it is too small. I went down too far. Alas. The original was 7 3/8, and the new one was 7, and it turns out that 3/8 is too big a difference. So I pack up the cap and plan to return it, but what will I do about my lack of an Indians cap? My boys are fighting for the pennant, yo!
And it turns out that sizes 7 1/8 and 7 1/4 are backordered. Woe! Instead of being available immediately, they will be available (so says the website) in two to four weeks. I sigh and order 7 1/4 anyway (reasoning that if it is slightly too big, it will be less too big than 7 3/8, and I'd rather that than have 7 1/8 be still too small). If nothing else, I will not have this problem next year.
But I just got an e-mail telling me that it shipped today! It should reach me on Wednesday, which -- this is really the exciting bit -- means I should have it for Thursday, when the Indians and Red Sox will be playing Game 5 of their series (guaranteed, because they're tied at 1 after two games), and I will be at the curling club playing in the first draw with my friend and teammate K, a die-hard Sox fan.
