mneh.

had trouble getting out of bed this morning. weird pressure-system things must be happening outside; my sinuses ache, and my ears, and i just wanted to stay lying down with my eyes closed. i wouldn't have minded a cool compress to put over them, actually.

but i have to eat, and i have to write these papers, so i got up. ugh. (speaking of which, exciting bad news followed by exciting good news:

at the beginning of the semester, in history of english, the syllabus read "graduate students will also write a research paper, due december 5." yeah. the professor said the date was a holdover from an earlier edition of the syllabus, and he'd get back to us on the due date or even whether he wanted us to do a research paper at all. this was the last i heard about it (although granted i didn't go to class much) until thursday, when an undergrad who's also in my morphology class asked if i had a paper to write for history of english; i said no, i didn't think so, and sought to confirm this with Y., another grad student who was also in my typology class last semester ... and she said yes, we do have a paper, but come on, it's no biggie, she'd written ten pages of fluff and there was no effort involved.

aiee. so i e-mailed the professor, saying listen, i have this question mark next to the due date for the paper, and i don't have a note that the issue of when or even whether the paper was due was ever resolved, but if it is, how many pages would you like, and on what sort of subject, and when?

got back an e-mail in which the professor declared himself an utter idiot for intending to have the four of us stick around after class and talk about this, but he's decided it's too late in the semester to set such assignments, so there's no paper, have a good weekend. followed, thankfully, by another e-mail saying of course, if we've already put in some work on a paper or project, we're welcome to hand that in instead of taking the final, and we should let him know which we prefer -- which makes me glad, because i felt bad that Y. had written this paper for no reason. so, lucky her, no final, and lucky me, no paper! :-)

was getting e-mail and livejournal out of the way, an hour or so ago, and the lights were flickering. the air conditioner was flickering as well, as was the tv monitor. finally things flickered enough that the monitor and the cable box, but nothing else, turned themselves off; the ac was running again, the lights were on, all good. so i reset the vcr clock (since the cable goes through the vcr and that clock had therefore gone to zero) and am more convinced than ever that weird storm-stuff is brewing.

must write philosophy of language paper. must write discourse analysis paper. must not let headache defeat me.
