a true story that happened to me

SCENE:  La Guardia airport, 5:20 pm, Monday, 21 January 2008.

counter guy:  Can I help you?
me:  Let me ask you this, which is probably a long shot.  With this ticket to Baltimore -- [brandishes boarding pass] -- is there any way you can punch some buttons and get me on that plane -- [points to plane] -- to National?  ... Where my car is and it would make my day a lot easier?
counter guy:  [punches a lot of buttons]
counter guy:  [for, like, five minutes]
counter guy:  You have any baggage checked?
me:  Nope.
counter guy:  [punches more buttons][hands me a new boarding pass]  Here you go.

So instead of landing at BWI at like 8pm and waiting for [livejournal.com profile] sanj to land at 10 and then drive me back home to DCA, I landed at DCA and drove home and got there at like 7:45.  WIN!

Wow! I thought the airlines had stopped doing nice, helpful things like that. Go you!

That is really kind of amazing! And a sign to the self that it's always important to ask!

How was MLKmas, then?

W00t!

Also, are you on IM (she says, about to log in and find out)? I feel the time has come to either message some of these geekboys or resign myself to eternal celibacy, but I'd like to consult on the matter.

On New Year's Eve, United did the same thing for me where the airports in question were Tampa and Orlando, which is the only reason it occurred to me to ask USAir about it today. Thing is, I was going to BWI because all the flights bringing me back to DCA were going to set me back like $200 more than the ticket I bought.

I've yet to try it with airports more than like an hour apart on the ground. Next up: "Hi, see, I have this ticket to Cincinnati, but can you do some things with that computer and reroute me to London?"

I am indeed. Back and forth, you know, settling back in, but I'm online for at least another hour or so.

Actually, I don't appear to have any sort of IM installed on this machine yet. Hold on.

Okay, I've got gmail chat working, though I can't make it show up on my gmail page.

Yeah... good luck with that one. And please do let me know if it works.

...but then I have to talk to them.

Ellen prefers to refuse to have her cake and not eat it, too. :-P

Score!

And it goes to prove once again that it very rarely hurts to ask.
