me and my maternal instincts

So here's the episode of SVU that begins with BD Wong translating for a Chinese preschooler who said her mother locked the door and said to give the baby a bottle "when the hand was on the red" (i.e. every three hours, right), and used up all the milk and the baby was crying, which had been going on for a couple of days which is why the police were there?  And they found the kids when they opened the closet and the baby was screaming and screaming and screaming, with its little face all red, and so on --

And I know that even very small children can be effective actors; they don't have to be very old before they understand about pretending.  But this is a little baby, like a year or less, and every time I see a baby crying on TV or the movies, all I can think is what did they do to that baby to make it scream like that.  :-(

(Heh, but then I keep seeing the commercial for the movie coming out next week with both Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman in it, and I keep thinking, SOLD.)
