I will tell you the story of the woman on the train in Chicago.

So, [livejournal.com profile] nlanza and I were out in Chicago a bit ago, out Toyota Park way to watch some rugby, and then the way you get back from there, you start out at Midway. So, coming back into the loop, on the train was this woman and her 4 kids, ranging in age from Baby to Possibly About Six. They were loaded up with luggage and looked tired, but the older kids had their Game Faces on and were helping out as much as they could. The woman looked tired and mildly confused and was obviously unfamiliar with the trains; she asked the person next to her a question about how to transfer and whatnot, which led to a whole Story Time session.

The story was, they'd been traveling since 5am (it was about 5pm). They were coming home from Florida, and their flight had been cancelled, and the only flight they could get bounced them through a couple stops and dropped them at Midway when their car was at O'Hare. So they were currently in the "getting from Midway to O'Hare" stage of the journey, after which they had another 2 hour drive to their actual home. They'd expected to be home before well before noon (6:30am was the initial flight time) and here they were at 5pm, still slogging.

I was like: one parent. 4 young kids. 12 hours into a day of travel that should only, at least 3 hours left to go. I was surprised ANY of them were keeping it together, because DAMN.

...anyway the returning to a different airport thing is what reminded me of that.
