monday morning

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide is on 861 words. Some of those words are actually parenthetic dashes, and some of them are crap, but in any case, I am nothing like as panicked about this thing as I was 24 hours ago, which is good, because I totally am going to work on the knitting on the train. :-)

Couch thing is set up in the guest room. Hooray! I actually now have more guest bedding than I am ever likely to have guests (keeping in mind the air mattress, old-school futon mattress, and comfy couch).

Still getting used to the computer clock being in the top corner instead of the bottom one.

Time to make the doughnuts. (I said this one morning at Rice Lake, as some of the curlers were arriving and heading into the building, and they looked at me more blankly than the student on whose paper I once wrote "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Of course these kids are about five years younger than that student, who was at least five years younger than me. Too young to remember "time to make the doughnuts", man. It may be the oldest I've ever felt.)

I can see not knowing "Time to make the donuts." (which might be regional, anyway) but there is *NO* excuse for not knowing "I do not think it means what you think it means."

Hmmph.

Um. Please to explain "Time to make the doughnuts"? I do not know the reference.

There was a Dunkin Donuts commercial campaign where the guy plodded in while it was still dark outside, muttering "time to make the doughnuts" -- it means, essentially, "nose back to the grindstone", and it became iconic (among people who were aware of it). Google turns up this: http://www.bestadsever.com/2007/06/dunkin-donuts-time-to-make-donuts.html (http://www.bestadsever.com/2007/06/dunkin-donuts-time-to-make-donuts.html).

It is okay for people who never had much pop-culture exposure not to know it. But this kid had missed it because he was nineteen years old, not because he simply hadn't been paying attention at the time. :-)

Yeah, *I* had no idea what you meant by "time to make the doughnuts"--maybe it was more of a regional thing? I dunno.

Obviously I get the Princess Bride thing...and it does make me very sad at younger generations who DON"T.

Maybe, but regionally you and I are the same, right? Who knows. In any case, it's not that I believe everyone will get a particular reference -- it's just that it's often kind of a shock when someone doesn't. :-)
