Normally, when I discover a mistake or for some other reason decide I need to go back a fair way in my knitting, I despair. This is because while I can tink just fine, that's only good for a few rows -- tonight I had whole inches of sock to undo. And I don't do at all well simply ripping out work and threading the needle through the live stitches. (I knit quite tightly, so the live stitches are very very small.) Best remedy I've worked out is to thread a spare needle through the row I hope to rip back to, so that when I've done the ripping there aren't live stitches just hanging there. Trouble is, that's not the easiest thing for me to do, esp. in this case where the sole is in linen stitch, which I didn't even try.
But! I was 100% successful threading the spare needle through the plain stockinette instep, so I ripped back to there and threaded the needle in the live sole stitches, and didn't drop any!, and tinked back a row to make sure everything was where it belonged, and knitted it up again, and now I am ready to proceed.
Those of you who don't knit can probably not grok how marvelous this is. But those of you who do may be joining me right now in saying Oh, Yay! :-D
