The snow total for the winter of 2009-10 is now at 54.9", which tops the previous record of 54.4". That record was set in 1898-9 - and was recorded somewhere in the city rather than at National Airport, since obvs. the airport didn't exist at the time, and the totals are always lower at DCA than kind of anywhere else in the area (making it a mysterious choice for the official measuring spot), so in fact the total increase over that 1898 record is even greater. We're very proud.

City and regional weather is always measured officially at airports, because that's where the measuring equipment is.

I know that. But it is a known fact that DCA is the warmest* and least-accumulative spot in the area - and, more to the point, comparing the modern official measurement taken at the airport to the pre-aviation official measurement taken someplace colder and with more accumulation will make the comparison, you know, a little skewed.

*ETA: I should say "mildest" - it's also never as hot there as in other places.
