olympics: pairs figure skating, snowboard cross

Given that the figure skating is a combination of the short and long program scores, the medals have fallen out exactly as they should have done. The pair that won the silver skated the only clean long program I saw all night, and the pair that won the gold nailed it hard enough last night in the short program that the one bobble they had in the long program didn't hurt them enough to knock them out of first. (I'll tell you what, the sound Scott Hamilton made when she slipped down out of that lift -- well. When you hear it you'll know what I mean. And just a moment later he made another non-verbal noise when they landed a throw successfully, and isn't it impressive how we can tell the difference between a gasping kind of grunt that means "wow!" and one that means "oh, shit!")

Also, heh. They saw their scores and they were in the lead and ... kind of not reacting. It was all the way until the announcer said "The team of Shen and Zhao is now in first place" that she started screaming. And the commentator-gang were all "Wait, how many skaters are left? None!" Hee.

I especially liked that these guys won the bronze in Salt Lake, meaning they were the ones who were staying the hell out of it during all that scoring dispute when the Canadian pair was robbed. In other news, returning gold-medal snowboard boy qualified in the middle of the pack and thus had (apparently?) shitty lane assignments, but hung in there and won the damn gold medal again. In both cases, patience pays off, y/n?
