OH MY GOD YOU GUYS

#42 (AT LEAST THIS AFTERNOON) HAS THIS CAPTION: "Mark Hamill is clearly in a celebratory mood during the photo call to promote the launch of his new production company, Berkely Square Films, at the Cannes Film Festival. One of the first films on their agenda? An adaptation of the comic Hamill co-wrote, "The Black Pearl.""

AND ALL I CAN THINK IS, OH MY GOD, MARK HAMILL, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!

... and then I remember that when the first film came out, I was ten days old, which must mean that dude is pushing 60, if not dragging it behind him. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? It's been more than thirty years for Carrie Fisher, too, and while she doesn't look remotely like she looked then, she doesn't look like that. (Also Harrison Ford. Cripes, Luke, I'm just saying.)

Okay, I went to look at the photo -- and, honestly, he looks better than I expected. You probably don't remember (since you weren't in kindergarten yet) but he was in a horrendous motorcycle accident during the filming of the second movie -- that's why they added the stuff on Hoth about the ice beast slicing into him, and him being in the healing tank, because of the motorcycle scars. After that, he was never going to go back to looking like the first movie again. And he's 59, not -- what, 20?

Meanwhile, Carrie has gone from being a speed freak (which she was during the first two movies at least, which is why she was so thin) to sober, to drugless and to a good few pounds more than before. I didn't even recognize her except for her voice, last time I saw her on anything.

I do know about the accident and the slicing-up stuff, and I've seen him since then - all this time he's been doing voice work, he's looked like himself-in-the-third-film, only older. I know how long thirty years is. This was quite a surprise to me. (Carrie Fisher, I feel, still does look like herself-plus-thirty-some. There's more of her, yes, and she's more of a wiseass now than she seems to have been then, but otherwise. Which I guess goes to show, if you barely recognize her, and I barely recognize him. [hands])

As for Harrison Ford, I think we've just gotten used to seeing him get older, since he hasn't been out of visible work (as opposed to doing voices). We've watched him get gray and get all those wrinkles, so it isn't as much of a shock.

I gotta say I'm shocked, too. It's the weight gain that's surprising; he didn't look bloated that way in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but then that was in 2001.
