I understand from the internets that the news of the evening is the death of Osama bin Laden. I note it here just for the record, so when I'm looking at my own journal in five years I won't think I missed it completely. (And it couldn't have happened to a nicer fellow, as far as I'm concerned.)

"A CIA operation", the AP is saying. And you know what that means I'm thinking of course, immersed as I am in popular culture. It means I'm thinking of something CJ Cregg once said, to wit: Some of these guys are going to be taken out by a busboy with a silencer.

I'm also finding myself thinking much more about the political ramifications of this. Many people I'm reading are saying this locks up a second term for Obama. With over a year to go until the election, I don't think it's as much of a lock as that, but it's definitely going to change things going forward.

Especially not with the DNC's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Sigh.

Which brings me to a line from the Capitol Steps' riff on "Barbara Ann", comically entitled "Bomb Iraq." This was from the late 90's - certainly post-1996, because it was sung in the voice of Bill Clinton featuring Saddam Hussein, and the line I'm thinking of is:

Bill: Saddam Hussein
I'm feelin' your pain
Saddam: To mess with you in an election year
I had to be insane!

The whole thing is actually hilarious in an extremely grim sort of way; the last verse begins with Hussein saying "What will you do/ the day that I'm through?" and Clinton answering, "I'm gonna bomb another country/ that is nastier than you!/ Bomb Iran!" ("Bomb bomb, bomb ...") I mean to say. AND YET.

I agree that it's too soon for anything to be, as they say, a mortal lock, but there certainly will be political consequences, yes. (And as others have been pointing out elsewhere, evidently they're cutting away from Celebrity Apprentice for the announcements?, which is particularly delicious irony. As a friend from high school commented on Facebook, "Check ... MATE.")
