1. wine = good. i enjoy wine, and i don't have it nearly often enough. of course, bad wine is especially bad.
2. kid comes up to me today -- at the sink in the ladies' room, of all places -- a girl who i don't recognize at all, and says "i was so glad i came to your lecture on tuesday. it really helped me on wednesday. otherwise i would have been totally confused." setting aside the fact that my class is meant to be a discussion, and not a lecture, go me! have successfully taught at least one kid the english consonant inventory (+/- voice, passive and active articulators, and manners of articulation). have also had positive comments from a couple of others, including a boy who sent me an e-mail full of questions tuesday evening, which i answered with (a) answers and (b) "please don't be afraid to ask this sort of question in class; i'm confident that a number of your classmates will appreciate it." his point was that it felt to him like everyone except him was getting it but to him it wasn't immediately obvious; my point was that none of them are supposed to know this stuff yet, which is why i'm there. also said to the girl at the sink: "i'm glad! that's what the class is for." yay!
3. the trouble with the car this time was a teeny-tiny crack in a big giant hose. the crack is somewhere near a sensor, but it's small, and the hose is tight, which is why the check engine light sometimes comes on and then goes off again after a day or so. [shrug] the guy said i ought to have it fixed one of these days, but it's not important to do it right away. so i'm not gonna. also, though, he said the tech found a couple of drying, cracking vacuum hoses -- these are original engine parts, and the car is just over 54K miles -- and told me he said "replace them. replace them now. i don't want her to have to bring this thing in again." thoughtful of him to consider my frustration, with how often i've had the car in the shop (my service advisor and i are pals now. this big giant hose that's cracked isn't something they keep in stock, so he said if i'm bringing the car in for some routine thing and want them to do that repair while they're at it, i should let them know a week or so ahead so they can order it. i said "dude, you could just order it now and put it in the Fox Box you probably have around here somewhere, 'cause you know i'll be back sooner or later for some reason." last time i was up there, i asked if all these troubles i've been having are normal -- because, i said, if i were the service guy and the car were a kid, i'd be checking me in for observation on, like, munchausen's by proxy. what would that be called, in this situation -- munchausen's auto?). so i was glad he ordered those hoses replaced. especially when he told me the total cost, including diagnostic, would be (get ready for it): $0.
sometimes it's nice to be pitied. wish the time he felt sorry for me and dismissed the whole charging-money thing with a wave of the hand had been the time the A/C needed fixing, but what can you do ...
4. the second glass of this wine is even yummier than the first. (and no, i'm not drinking wine at the same time as i'm taking codeine. co.deine. delighted to have had it; don't need it any more. will save the rest for the next time i have excruciating sleep-preventing pain.)
