how's this for shoulda seen it coming:

in-state tuition and fees (full time, i.e. 9 or more hours) for this fall? $1097 more than it was last fall.

my loan? exactly the same.

what this means is that what i was expecting to be a direct deposit of $1300+ -- the balance of the loan after the school takes its cut -- has turned out to be a direct deposit of $254.

yeah, that's not going to last as long as it was supposed to.

Ugh!

Not that I like the idea of suggesting borrowing more money, but did they make the tuition and fees decision after the loan decision was made? If so, you're probably eligible for more.

i'm already eligible for more -- the loan in question is the subsidized government loan, and i borrowed the max. there's plenty of money available in unsubsidized government loans, but if the interest isn't going to be subsidized, i can borrow it on better terms from elsewhere. just hadn't planned to, quite yet, is all. grr. (also, i should be getting paid ... one of these days ... for the grading and the teaching. but maybe i'll consider that Found Money when it does roll in, and use it to buy christmas presents. and move. le sigh ...)

Yeah, but how much subsidized you're eligible for may have changed, since that's based partly on tuition and fees rates. I've been through this. I've also stopped accepting loans that aren't subsidized, which makes me very happy!
