this week's assignment:

Section A
Transcribe the following sentences in phonetic symbols (according to the system discussed in class and given on Handout 4). Be sure to mark at least one stress (acute accent) on each word; a word may have secondary stress (grave accent) as well. Also be sure not to transcribe the spaces between words; remember, the speech stream is a continuum.

1. The old ram stands looking down over rockslides, stupidly triumphant.

2. I will be brief: your noble son is mad.

3. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Section B

So.....you gonna explain (in a locked entry so students won't find it) to us non-linguists what those phonetic ones are?

i'll either do it in a locked entry, or i'll do it next week after they've handed it in. 'cause tomorrow is the answers to last week's assignment (which, right, so many people care about. [g])

Never read Grendel. :) I was just curious how you came up with that phrasing and now I know. :-*

Oh, yeah

Locking. Kids these days! ;) Is there a way to lock responses? Wouldn't it be nice to get your hands on the specs for this thing?
