fannish content? what?
I see from the meticulously-kept records that it has been ages since I've posted about anything other than my dad, my boyfriend, or my health. (Or some combination of these.) But I'm still here, the fangirl inside! Honest!
In the past couple of weeks I have finally, after a long hiatus, returned to the Vorkosigan saga. I was in the middle of Falling Free when my dad got sick, and completist though I am, that one wasn't compelling enough to sustain my interest through that level of Other Stuff Going On. But I've finished it now, and am making a dent in Diplomatic Immunity, which I think means soon I will have caught up with the rest of you and be allowed to read the fanfic, which will feel like a re-entry into fandom. ;-)
Then the other day (yesterday?) in the car,
ellen_fremedon and I were talking about a couple of cartoons I remembered from my childhood - why I was thinking of them I don't know, but she didn't remember either one. (I've googled them both, but here's what I remembered in the conversation.)
The first was "Belle & Sebastian" - Sebastian was a little boy and Belle was a St Bernard dog, and they ... fought crime? I don't know, they had adventures. What I remember was that the style was sort of early Japanese animation (big eyes, big heads - I don't think I'd say chibi, but certainly proto-chibi, and I could be wrong as I am not a connoisseur), the people's mouths just kind of opened and closed when they spoke but didn't move in any other ways, and the animators were very fond of the scene where Sebastian and Belle ran up a hill and a town in the valley was revealed as they reached the crest.
The second was called something like "Cities of Gold", and it was about three kids - two boys and a girl, of course, because you can't have more than one girl unless they're all girls - the lead was named Esteban and I think one or the other of the other kids was a native South American? They are searching for El Dorado, but I'm not sure why. And there was an adult - I mean, a series of them, but one in particular, whose path they kept crossing (and possibly whose ends they kept thwarting? except he wasn't a bad guy, just somehow often interested in different things than they were), whose name I can't remember, but he wore a swoopy cloak or cape and is it possible he was revealed to be the father of one of the kids?
I'm sure if I post this on Dreamwidth, someone will know exactly what show(s) I mean and will have the whole thing on DVD, I said to Ellen. Yes, she said, and will request it for Yuletide, now that you've brought it up.
So. Who remembers these shows and wants to talk about them with me? ;-) Belle and Sebastian; The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
