question for [personal profile] mamadeb or [profile] jorit

... or anyone who happens to have a hebrew calendar on them, actually.

by my lunar calendar here, rosh hashanah is this thursday night. question: how many days are in the month of elul? when, specifically, is/was elul 23?

thanks --

This past Saturday was 23 Elul - the yarzheit of 9/11. Nothing in either the shul we visited nor the Shabbaton we attended made mention of that, and in fact I forgot until just now.

Rosh HaShanah starts this coming *Friday* night, not this coming Thursday. The New Moon astronomically may be Thursday, but R"H can never begin on on Thursday night because then Yom Kippur would be a Sunday and that is not permitted - can't have two days of absolutely no cooking in a row.
