this week's assignment is sissy stuff -- we lost a lecture period to isabel, so i had 33% less stuff to cover than i usually do, and we've begun a new unit, so there's not even that much to review. so here it is:

Define the following:

phoneme
allophone
minimal pair
distribution
free variation

yeah. piece of cake. plus, they have an assignment due in the lecture course (was supposed to be due today, but isabel bumped it back to wednesday), so i thought i'd cut them a little slack.

but. remember the first assignment? here are the answers:

Section A
Give as much information as you can about the articulation of the sounds represented by the following symbols:

1. [g]
voiced velar stop

2. [l]
voiced alveolar (lateral) liquid resonant

3. [p]
voiceless (bi)labial stop

4. [d]
voiced alveolar stop

5. [n]
voiced alveolar nasal (stop)

Section B
Give the symbols for the sounds with the following descriptions:

6. voiceless glottal stop
[?] (actually a sort of question-mark-without-the-dot symbol, but we allow question marks from kids who type their assignments since the glottal stop isn't part of the standard character set)

7. voiced bilabial (median) glide resonant
[w]

8. voiced bilabial nasal
[m]

9. voiceless interdental (slit) fricative
[8] (heh. this is the best i could do in this format -- it's actually a theta, this symbol)

10. voiceless alveolar stop
[t]

Section C
Give as much information as you can, and the symbols, for the following sounds:

11. the first sound of the word "color"
(aspirated) voiceless velar stop [k] (or [kh])

12. the first sound of the word "yellow"
voiced palatal (median) glide resonant [y] (makes me nuts that we use [y] instead of [j], but there you go)

13. the last sound of the word "hiss"
voiceless alveolar fricative [s]

14. the last sound of the word "his"
voiced alveolar fricative [z]

15. the last sound of the word "bring"
voiced velar nasal (stop) [n,] (another massive drag -- the symbol here is actually engma, a lowercase n with a leftward hook hanging down off the right-hand leg)
