twenty-three months

Crikey, it's already been two and a half three weeks since the prince was 23 months old.

I think next month when he turns two I'm going to have to admit that I'm not able to keep up with this every month and call it a day. :-)

He's just transitioned up to a two-year-old room at day care, and it's tough for him in the mornings; he doesn't want his dad to leave or even put him down. He definitely went through a phase like this when he moved to the toddler room he's just left (and for a week or so before, when he was the only one left in his older-infants room with a bunch of new wee babies after all his big-kid friends had moved to toddler rooms just a hair ahead of him), so I know it won't last forever, but poor boo. On the flip side, in the afternoons he's delighted and relieved to see me and doesn't do the thing where he comes and hugs my knees and then runs back to playing and I can't get him out of the sandbox with a prybar. Right now he runs to me and is happy to come out in the hall and even climbs up into the stroller by himself, which is new this week. Yesterday when I got there to pick him up another two or three kids in his class also clustered around to see who I was and what I was doing there, and he got mad at not less than one of them. ("That's my mommy! MY mommy, [other kid]!" I assured him it was okay for his friends to say hi to me and I would still be his mommy.)

Of course as much as he can do by and for himself, he wants to do now. Putting on his shoes (which he can't do); taking off his shoes (he can do one but then needs help with the other); zipping up his jacket (as long as we get it started); taking off his jacket (he can do this entirely on his own now); screwing and unscrewing lids on bottles and jars (not much luck yet, thank god). Putting his laundry in his own laundry hamper. Closing doors. When I ask him if he wants to close his bedroom door - or almost anything else that I know he wants to do - he comes hurrying over saying "Yes thank you Mommy!" In the past day or so he has added "You're welcome!" It is freaking adorable.

Bedtime is once again a challenge. But it's because he's growing and learning so much, and I have every confidence he will grow out of it soonish. Oh my god soon it will be time to convert his crib into a toddler bed. AAAACK.
