return to Due South (the cold open)

The fannish renaissance continues. I got the whole run of DS ripped and organized into Plex, after many years of having only the ostensible season 1 DVD box set, (a) which lacks the pilot and (b) from which episode 3 "Manhunt," episode 11 "You Must Remember This," episode 19 "Heaven and Earth," and episode 20 "Victoria's Secret part 1" failed to copy. So I had sort of two-thirds of season 1 for many years and had to contemplate the rest in my head like Fraser "listening" to a Mahler symphony by reading the score. :-P (It's possible I also have "Mountie on the Bounty" on VHS, but you can imagine how useful a VHS tape is to me in these modern times.)

Anyway now I've got the whole shebang, so I'mma start up another generation of episode reviews. Because I want to, because I can, and because we're doing a renaissance here. Come on back to Dreamwidth, everyone, we miss you!

Various fen keep inviting me to their Plex and I haven't taken them up on it because IDEK how it works. Interested in knowing what "drives you mad" about it.

I find it weirdly buggy. Sometimes it works beautifully, and those are happy days. Other times it just refuses to function at all - on my TV, for example, it wants an IP address and I've tried every one for the TV, and it still won't work. It sometimes works on my PS4, and sometimes not, and it sometimes works on my PS5, and often not.

I get so frustrated! And their help files don't help me much.

Thank you kindly for this info. It actually makes me feel better about not having tried the Plex yet -- I already have more than enough tech-related frustrations in my life and not adding one more is a good thing.

I really prefer physical sources (i.,e., DVDs), and there was a time when fen were regularly burning discs of shows and sharing them around, but that seems to have stopped happening (and before that it was sharing VHS tapes, but I came into fandom when the shift from tapes to discs had already happened). My second choice is when someone puts some shareable vids or shows into Dropbox for me to download.

I do love having soft copies, but I wish Plex worked reliably for me. Or Universal Media Server. Or anything.

Even pulling the copies from the DVDs is not foolproof. I was given some Dr Who discs for my birthday, and Monster of Peladon copied episodes 1-5 beautifully. Episode 6, though, is a nightmare. I've pulled it four times, and it hasn't worked properly. I don't know if it's my DVD player/writer or the disc.
