bleh

On my personal phone, normally don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. (I barely answer calls from numbers I do recognize, but that's a separate issue. 😛) (I now have a work cell phone, which means I never have to worry that a number I don't recognize on my personal phone is someone calling my work desk phone and being forwarded. Huzzah.) Granted that meant a couple-few weeks ago I missed a call from the credit union checking why we hadn't paid our mortgage; fortunately, they (a) left me a message and (b) called Himself next, who googled the number rather than ignoring it and picked up in time for them to ask him in real time, and the whole thing was sorted in minutes. (Automatic payment hadn't gone through because ~reasons,~ nothing to worry about, not the point of this discursion.)

Only just now it rang with a number from the town next to my mother's, and I've got her cell and her um-friend's cell and land line and her doctor's and his partner's numbers all in my phone, but there are many millions of other people in the metro area. How do I know this isn't a complete stranger calling me because I'm high on her list of emergency contacts? How do I know she hasn't wandered off, fallen down, etc. etc. etc.? (I'm aware of the irony in my tendency to let calls that I know are from her go to voice mail at least half the time but pick up immediately when a call could, for all I know, be about her.)

It was an absolutely non-Mom-related organization I've donated to in the past calling to talk to me about their work (and, no doubt, ask if I'd like to donate again). /o\ Quick adrenaline dump and then I hope I was kind when I told the young person I'm glad they're doing well, my donation schedule is what it is, and I have to get back to work. Whew.

So much same - I hate answering my phone. My own home phone, which I use for nothing, is only set to be answered by my fax machine.

Only bad thing is I'm waiting on a call from my boss asking why I'm quitting. Definitely do NOT want to answer that, but I have to.

They're not, no - except my client (I'm a consultant) called my boss yesterday to say they're going to offer me a job. So, cat's out of the bag. But I don't want the guilt trip of "Why aren't you staying? How could you do this?" crap line of questioning.

::sigh::

Oh definitely. I've heard the "We're not a company, we're a family," on multiple occasions. Yeah, well sometimes a family can be dysfunctional.

Here's hoping it all goes well!
