on the day i handed in my last paper ...
handed in the paper (twice) around 10:30. intro finals weren't due until noon, but most of them were already in my box (thoughtfully alphabetized by the professor). popped over to the anthropology department to pick up my rec letters from Recommender #3. popped over to the library to return the four books i had in my bag, thus settling my debt with the university library forever. popped over to the bookstore to speak to the cap-and-gown lady, who wasn't there. went back to the department.
graded finals. this took about four and a half hours. most were B-ish; a couple were very good, and some were very bad. my favorite was the one in which the kid had written a note at the beginning: "i didn't have enough time to do as good of a job as i'd have wanted. please grade me on what i have." (of the three parts of the test, he hadn't completed one and had barely begun another. of course i graded him on what he had -- an incomplete exam. he got a D on the final and, i believe, a C in the course.)
popped back to the apartment to drop off my bookbag, then went back to the department to meet a couple of the other grad students and go out carousing. got convincingly drunk on a succession of mixed drinks and beer. ran into one of my students at one bar, celebrating his 22nd birthday. ended up at the home of one of the other grad students, where after an hour or so B (whose apartment it was) passed out on the floor. the two others went home, and i (too drunk to leave quite yet) woke B up and made him go to bed, then curled up on the couch to sleep it off a bit. woke up after a while, with no idea what time it was; called for a cab, which didn't come, so i walked home. when i got home it was 6:15, so i drank some water, put plugs in my ears, and went to bed.
maintenance arrived at 11:30 to fix my overhead light.
after that i got a little more sleep, though, and having drunk more water and had a shower i felt much better. (how is it that showering makes the dehydration headache go away? am i like a plant, that i respond to being watered on the outside?) went to the department, reviewed grades with prof., grades are now ready to be submitted. am actually therefore through being a grad student here; all that remains is to be given my own fall grades and my diploma.
tomorrow: return of the king. huzzah!
