yay, movies!

finally saw spider-man deux last night with [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon.

holy mackerel that was probably the single best opening title sequence i have ever seen. yay, opening titles! i also had a little fangirl-moment when the frame came up announcing that the story was by some people i hadn't heard of and michael chabon. [swoons] i pimped the amazing adventures of kavalier & clay to ellen all the way home in the car, and will do so to all of you now. READ THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY OMG. i remember being aware as i was reading it -- two summers ago, now -- that i wanted to marry the way chabon handles language. the book is dense like a tightly-packed thing that is dense, and yet the language is graceful and economical and deft like you know he just did something really impressive and for the life of you there's no way you're going to figure out how. [swoons again] this was also one of the only times i can remember still feeling affected by something i'd read several days after i'd finished it. STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND READ IT. but it'll take you a while, if you read it right. (i also liked the mysteries of pittsburgh, which i read years ago visiting a friend in paris, on the strength of the fact that it was in english; and also wonder boys, which kicked the movie's ass, naturally. i haven't read his short stories, but i probably should.)

[swoons for a third time]

yeah, so anyway, michael chabon -- who was one of the early people tapped to write the x-men screenplay, did you know? -- was in on the story. and yay! because the story was good. it had, as ellen and i agreed, everything a superhero movie should have, plus [redacted, hidden even from people willing to be spoiled]. YAY! i approve very highly.

and in an hour i'm off to my parents' house, with a carful of Stuff I'm Beginning To Move Home For Storage, and in about 50 hours i will be a sister-in-law. i've never been an in-law before! ack! [deep breaths]

see y'all on monday --
