blah blah blah olympics, but --

to the iranian athlete who will (probably) withdraw from the games rather than compete because he drew an israeli opponent in the first round?

i mean this most heartily and sincerely: fuck you.

that's all bob and katie have for us so far. i don't even remember the sport -- wrestling? judo? -- but the guy is a reigning world (?) champion and has drawn an israeli opponent in the first round, blah blah blah 1967 refuse to recognize israel's right to exist, story is still developing, guy is expected to scratch his entry rather than etc.

mainly i've been focusing on, like [livejournal.com profile] mearagrrl said, the costumes, the colors, the happy faces, the blondness and non-south-american-looking-ness of the argentinian team [g], etc. and bob costas generally entertains me (katie couric: "the central african republic --" bob costas: "which, we always duly note, is located in central africa.")

thanks for the info. I do occasionally watch tv on shabbat (not often, but sometimes) and was seriously considering watching tonight for the pageantry of it. If I do? it'll be good that I know this going in, so thank you.

My sentiments exactly.

I was watching the Iraqi team march and going "Oh, isn't that cool! The Australians picked them up and flew them secretly to Greece so that they could compete! I love the Olympics!" and then came the Iranian team.

Hissssssss.

At least he's pretty much shooting himself in the foot if he doesn't compete. His loss. I hope eventually he realizes it.

Call me cynical, but he'll probably be treated as a hero in his country for it.
