blah blah blah olympics

my co-worker said to me the other day, My roommate and I were trying to figure out why NBC is manufacturing this huge rivalry between the US and Australian swimming teams -- like, they always focus on the Americans to the exclusion of other people, but what's the deal with Australia?

and i pointed out what someone in programming at NBC must have focused on: young, good-looking guys who speak english.

i'm not actually complaining. :-)

I don't see that they're manufacturing anything. They're the top two swimming programs in the world. A rivalry is bound to develop, especially in the relay events, which are true inter-program races.

focusing so myopically on it, then. that's not what's important. what's important is, young, good-looking guys who speak english. my point is still there. (the borderline nudity is really just a bonus.) :-)

I don't think it's even myopic, as far as that goes.

But the whole near-naked boys thing, I'm all about that. I'm not even particularly picky about what language they speak.

Well, with what's gone on with the relays, it's really all anyone talks about re: Olympics at places where old Olympians hang out between games. Well, you know, swimmers, the Olympians who matter. So, no, not fabricated by the media, not this one, anyway. Seriously, since I became accustomed to seeing these guys (Olympians, but also a fair number of all-Americans who have competed at trials) around the pool and met/started being coached by a few (around September 1999), the relay teams have been what most gets discussed, including behind their backs. Why focus on swimming? Because it's the BEST! What annoys me is how little attention they (well, my former coach, anyway) pay to distance events.

And, yeah, hasn't the day come for them to start pulling up their pants?

well, there was the fact that the australian team won the gold last Olympics over the favored home team.
