Never, NEVER write a long entry directly into the update window. Always use a word processor, save regularly, and cut-and-paste into the window. I use Notebook because it doesn't add any weird characters to the text.

the hell of it is, i was done and had copied all the text before hitting "post", because my wireless connection had freaked out and i wasn't sure LJ wasn't going to eat the entry. and i was on my way to open a word processor so i could save the text before trying to post. and that's when the whole thing froze.
