PHE4R MY CONFIGURATION SKILZ

yeah, so, i got the internet hookup in my room sorted, as they say. w00t!

that's all for now. oh, except: british banks SUCK. do you know they wanted a two thousand pound minimum balance to give an international student a checking account? TWO THOUSAND POUNDS. that is not a misprint.

because every student i know has four grand free to leave sitting around doing nothing.

[ETA: slight glitch -- i can receive e-mail, but not send it, evidently. i get the following error message: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: '[earthlink user name]', Server: 'smtp.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F". any thoughts?]

I'd offer you my old account, it's just sitting there, but that would be a problem I suspect :) British banks do suck. Does your old firm do business in England? You might be able to get them to "sponsor" you for an account.

THAT is just absurd. Not to mention ridiculous. Two thousand pounds?? Yeah, I'd like to have that just lying about to open an account with.

Do you still have Zone Alarm installed? Check to see if it's blocking the SMTP server for Earthlink. Look under program access.

forget open -- it's a ridiculous amount for an initial deposit, but i could probably do it. but to maintain it as a minimum -- shit, i thought "student" accounts with $500 minimum balances were nutty.

and: no, all ZA is blocking is AOL on Desktop, IE, and Messenger. rar.

Well, yay for internet, but BIG boo for the bank!! How did you end up getting an account when you were in Edinburgh? Surely someone else there can recommend a course of action?? There's got to be lots of international grad students!!

Also, MORE UPDATE! What is the place you're staying in like? Have you met any nice people? Any nasty people? When do you start meeting with tutors or having classes or what?

::boggle::

Err, is there some sort of international student support office where you can find help finding a SANE bank, one that isn't asking for almost $4000?

Recently Earthlink changed their SMTP configurations. try smtpauth.earthlink.net as your outgoing SMTP server.

I just changed mine last week. Probably in all the moving stuff you missed that email from them.

I hope all else is going well.

Aside from what Farrah said, if that still doesn't work, it might be that in order to control spam and what not the University or ISP's connection may only allow SMTP connections to their SMTP servers... For instance, even though my empiredc.com server is capable of sending SMTP, I have to route my SMTP through vzavenue.net (my ISPs SMTP server)
