that was the year that was - 2004

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?

Negotiated for more pay than the employer had offered me in the first place. (And won! I was, professionally speaking, In Demand.)

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't make New Years' resolutions. As I said last year, I prefer not to have evidence of my eventual failure.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

My cousin!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My sister-in-law's father.

5. What countries did you visit?

Canada, France, UK.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?

A stronger dollar wouldn't hurt.

7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

July 17 -- my brother's wedding.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Dudes, I won the vice-skip skills competition at the Kayser. That's crazy. Tapped a rock from the edge of the 12-foot circle to within four inches of the pin. Still proud of it.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I'd like to have won the whole damn Kayser, of course. But life isn't always like that. Also, as happy as I am to be here, I'll always wish Georgetown had said yes so I wouldn't have had to move, move away, etc. Don't know if I can consider either of those my own failure, though. I also wish a lot of things had gone differently at [livejournal.com profile] restituere, which, once I came in as a mod, was partly my responsibility.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

It was the year of sinus infections and colds from HELL, but what year isn't? Also, took a slip on the ice that has left a permanent bruise-thing and a pea-sized lump on my left knee. I think that counts as injury.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Oh, the seatbelt bag. Yay!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Markus Rogan.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Oh, god. I'll go with the soldiers at Abu Ghraib, shall I?

14. Where did most of your money go?

It's probably evenly split between rent at my old building and college fees here. The university might have a slight edge.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Oxford!

16. What song will always remind you of 2004?

Um ... I'm sure I'll come up with one. Give me a minute.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder?

about the same, I think. just, different things to be sad about.

ii. thinner or fatter?

thinner.

iii. richer or poorer?

poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Singing -- now I'm back in it, I wish I hadn't been gone so long.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Fretting. Grinding my teeth.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

At my cousin's house, with the extended family on my mother's side.

22. Did you fall in love in 2004?

Yes.

23. How many one-night stands?

Four.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Vintage West Wing, vintage Law & Order.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No. I try not to hate people -- it's a waste of energy. If I don't like someone, I try not to dwell on it.

26. What was the best book you read?

Good Omens.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

iTunes. I know, great discovery, eh? But I lurve it.

28. What did you want and get?

Into grad school for what will eventually, one hopes, be a PhD.

29. What did you want and not get?

See #22.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Hmm. I'm going to say it's a toss-up between Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles, and that's going to make me sound really geeky, isn't it?

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

hung out with my family the day before my graduation ceremony; saw troy. heh.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

I'm not sure what this and #29 are doing in the same list of questions.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?

Can I afford it?

34. What kept you sane?

To the extent anything did, it was my family and all of y'all.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Um ...

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

You think I'm going to say the election, don't you? I almost did -- but I think the whole marriage issue, the modern civil rights movement that's going on, is the answer. It'll matter more in the long term.

37. Who did you miss?

My family. And, for the past three months, also the DCfolk.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I've met a lot of new people this year. I can't even name them all, never mind single one out as the Best.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004.

Don't count on anyone to tell you whether or not you need a visa.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

'cause i'm leavin' on a jet plane
don't know when i'll be back again;
oh, babe, i hate to go.
