saul bellow has died.  the AP article contains the following paragraph:

"The backbone of 20th-century American literature has been provided by two novelists -- William Faulkner and Saul Bellow," Philip Roth said Tuesday.  "Together they are the Melville, Hawthorne, and Twain of the 20th century."

i felt a little breeze just now, and i'm pretty sure it was from hemingway going "hey, phil? pppptthhthhthtbbtbbththththhhh!"

(bellow, who was 89, was married five times and leaves three grown sons and a five-year-old daughter.  yes.  that's what it says.)
