it was 1978; John Paul in august, and JP2 in october. so i was [cough] not quite eighteen months.

... i think i won't. because i'm not anti-catholic, any more than i'd want some non-jewish person to be anti-semitic. i'm alarmed by the selection of this dude as pope (and incidentally, i've already heard someone decide to call him Pope Palpatine I; see also this recipe (http://www.livejournal.com/users/glenmarshall/14532.html) for Pope Benedict), but i have nothing against the catholic faith in general.

i do know that (because we do not joke about the Hitler Youth). but i will say, in his defense, that membership in the HJ was compulsory at the time he was in it, and i frankly don't know if i'd have had the stones to resist (assuming, of course, i hadn't already been packed into one of those trains).
