so following sebastienne's recommendation, i went and got myself fitted at bravissimo, and sure enough!, it appears i've been wearing the wrong bra size all this time.

changing clothing sizes never seems like a big deal, but this is a weird adjustment to make.  it's like being told that i should buy jeans in a smaller size and with longer legs.

Gah, yes. I discovered, aged about 16, that I'd been wearing a bra three cup sizes too small. Which explained a lot.

it's possible, but i haven't noticed changes in the way my existing bras fit. it's not that they're wrong now; it's that they've never really been right.

Does depend where one shops though - if I go from trying on bras in M&S to trying on bras in Ann Summers, I jump 3 cup sizes. Stupid non-standardised sizing.

That's the first thing i'm going to do when I take over the fashion industry is standardise sizes. And size according to body shape as well. I have so many dreams...

Oh, honestly. Buying clothing for my husband is so much easier, because every pair of 32x33 pants is the same size. I don't know why women's clothes have to be so confusing. You've got my vote for fashion industry dictator... for what it's worth. [g]

Yeah, but losing five pounds of weight can change your bra size. For a garment, it has to be ridiculously well-fitted to work right.

:-) fair point. i read their little description of how they think things should fit, including the bit about the band riding up in the back being a sign the bra is too big, and a light bulb went on over my head. and then i went on down to the actual store they have here on broad street to get fitted. :-)

Youused to buy too big bras? Not something liely to happen to me...
... but yeah, if you actually went to a store, then my question is answered.

Tell ya who actually has nicely-fitting bras in the US: Lane Bryant. I've lost enough weight that I don't need to buy clothes with them any more, but I still like the bras and pantyhose (Spandex, geddit?)

i bought them where they fit when i put them on! i mean, the concept of buying something that feels not just snug, but actively too small, when it's new -- it's a new thing for me. i get now that my whole concept of what a well-fitting bra is supposed to feel like was wrong.

Well, I went and read their fitting advice, and you're right, it's very helpful. I don't think I ever made mistakes about cups recently, but I certainly did about back size. Also, it helps to know that all of the bra is smaller if you buy one size smaller, so if you aren't snug enough in a 36E, a 34F makes sense; I'd never tried that.
