one rantlet, and then LOTR:

does it bother anyone else that the differences between a box of twenty caplets of advil cold & sinus (tm) and a box of twenty caplets of advil flu & body ache (tm) are

(a) the color of the box and
(b) twenty cents?

honest to god. same active ingredients, same proportions, same indications, same warnings and contraindications. the purple box costs you twenty cents more, is all. and why?

because they can.

now, the two towers:

i cannot, cannot, cannot understand the thinking that impels people to seek out spoilers before they go to see a movie. just don't get it.

in this case, it's less of a thing, because everyone knows the story (although, when i saw fellowship in the theater there were many, many people who didn't know gandalf was going to fall into the chasm with the balrog, and the collective gasp took me vicariously back to the moment when i first read that -- and read that page seven or eight times before i'd convinced myself to turn it; very satisfying) so it's not a matter of being spoiled on the content, but more on the interpretation. but still!

what i'm thinking of, specifically, is the bit where legolas swings up onto the horse behind aragorn, swoop swoop swoop. so. cool. a mere instant, of no storytelling consequence whatsoever, so on one hand it could safely have been shown to me a month ago and nothing would have been lost; but on the other hand, the thrill of that moment would have been lost. (i'll go to my grave annoyed at lucasfilm for putting darth maul's two-bladed saber in the trailer, for instance. grr.) i mean, it's gone now -- the whole place (packed) applauded that move, but the next time i see it, it won't be nearly as excellent, because it won't be unexpected. and that goes double, triple, a hundredfold for the (rare, anymore) movie where we don't know the story going in, i.e. the movie with an original, non-adapted screenplay. why on earth do people look for opportunities to waste that?

For years, I've known this, and I've always been infuriated by it.

yeah -- i first noticed it when the purple box was "new! advil flu & body ache," but i didn't have an LJ then. :-D and i haven't seen the stuff since, except then tonight i did. and it all came flooding back.
